The Flagship, August 10, 2006
You've got years of sea duty under your belt, but can you build a seaworthy vessel from corrugated cardboard? That's the question sponsors of the "4th Annual Cardboard Boat Regatta" are asking sailors this year.
The regatta, which takes place at Ocean Breeze Waterpark in Virginia Beach, is looking for sailors and ship crews to compete in the wacky and wet event on Sept. 7, 6-9 p.m. The regatta raises funds to support underserved youth in Virginia Beach's Seatack community.
Can a seaworthy vessel be built from cardboard? Last year 28 boats raced through the waterpark's Wave Pool with the wave machine off.
Spectators enjoyed the finals that featured the wave machine on and plenty of fine seamanship. In this regatta, it's as fun to sink as it is to float.
The regatta offers families, friends and Navy crews a chance to design, build and navigate a unique and fun boat -- made entirely of corrugated cardboard.
To prepare participants for the event (although it's not required), Taylor's Do It Centers will hold a "Build-A-Boat" class Aug. 12, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at 1123 Independence Blvd. (Haygood). The class provides a video, sample boat and hands-on training that teaches families and crews how to build three classes of cardboard boats -- guppy (1-2 crew members), dolphin (3-5 crew members), and whale (6-10 crew members). Racers are divided into two groups -- youth (8-13 years old) and adult (14 and older).
Participants build the boats at their own location and haul them to the Cardboard Boat Regatta, Sept. 7.
